Pintaloosa Horse Info (with Photos) A Fusion of Pinto and Appaloosa Beauty!

A Pintaloosa is a horse produced by breeding a Pinto or Paint horse with an Appaloosa horse. The resulting Pintaloosa may display Pinto or Appaloosa markings, a combination of both, or no markings. This uniquely spotted horse often gets lots of attention at horse shows or online as they are rare.

What is a Pintaloosa Horse?

A pintaloosa horse is not a horse breed but rather a crossbreed of two horses with a colorful pattern.

A pinto horse is also a color pattern of the horse rather than a breed with any base color and larger irregular patches of white. There are many different types of pinto color patterns.

On the other hand, Appaloosa horses are a recognized breed known for their spotted coat pattern and striped hooves. Crossing these two patterns may result in a uniquely colored horse with a mix of small spots and larger patches. Pintaloosa horses are relatively rare as few breeders focus on breeding crossbreeds. The rarity of this particular pattern and its striking appearance make Pintaloosa horses more desired by horse enthusiasts, and they usually sell for more money than a standard bay or gray horse.

What is the difference between a Pinto and a Paint Horse?

In short, a paint horse is a horse breed, while pinto refers to the color of a horse. These horse breeds are often confused, as their uniquely patterned coats can appear the same to an untrained eye.

The following Pintaloosa Patterns are recognized by the International Pattern Sporthorse Breed Registry:

Type A   Pintaloosa Horse This horse will exhibit the pattern of the pinto and the appaloosa.

Type B  Pinto Pattern Horse This horse will exhibit the Pinto Pattern only.  This horse may have a lp patn (appaloosa) parent and a pinto parent or have a Pintaloosa parent. A horse that shows no characteristics of the LP or patn (appaloosa) horse may be eligible to be registered Pinto.

Type C Appaloosa Pattern Horses  This horse will exhibit the Lp and Patn pattern only. This horse must have a lp patn (appaloosa)  parent or be out of a Pintaloosa.

Type D Non-Pattern This horse is out of two patterned parents but shows no lp patn (appaloosa) or pinto patterns

What is the difference between an Appaloosa and a Pinto?

An appaloosa horse (referred initially to the Palouse horses) is a breed of horse with specific types of markings, including a few different coat patterns including spots, blanket, and blanket with light or dark spots, leopard patterns, roan, roan blanket with spots, varnish roan, and solid color. An Appaloosa horse needs proof of Appaloosa lineage to be registered as a purebred Appaloosa. A pinto horse is not a specific breed but rather a horse with a colorful coat of pinto patterns.
